  1. Please go to the actual sanctuary on Ko Lanta; the one featured here still use bullhooks and offer bathing and feeding the elephants. These are unethical practices and you should not support them with your money.

  2. Firstly, a nice video I appreciate a lot of advices about what to do on Koh Lanta I just came here and for sure I will use some of good tips you had in your video.

Secondary but more important maybe I am wrong but elephants in their natural environment are not taking mud spa with strange humans. Almost every single video about Thailand on YT shows this super duper humanitarian sanctuary where they don't hurt animals only make friends with them and never ever hurt them.

Please people think about it deeper. It's good that the people noticed that riding elephants is not cool because they need to be first brutally tamed. Thai people noticed too most of them just changed business name a bit. Now it is called sanctuary. Your not riding elephants you just feed them and mud bath them.

Sounds harmless isn't it? Not really. Why?

    1. Elephants in the natural environment are not bathing with people especially strange tourist. It is a wild animal after all. Their instincts are against that.
    2. Since their instincts are against you still need to kill that instincts and you do it brutally.
    3. In order to make a good business you need to be sure that elephant won't hurt some random tourists especially family with kids.
    4. You do it pretty much same way as they do it with riding.

You need to train animal by crushing its will and making it feel helpless without any hope than anyone will ever help it in case elephant decide to disobey. Here is some quote form google but you can read much more about it if you are curious.

"In Thailand, captive elephants are trained using a process known as “phajaan” or “the crush”. This process involves separating the elephant from its mother and other family members, confining it in a small space, and subjecting it to physical and psychological abuse."

So business is business. Now you don't ride elephant you just feed it and bath it but since it still could hurt you you still need to train it so it won't.

My advice is that if you really want to see elephants go for a safari type of tour into one of many national parks in Thailand and be happy if you manage to see some elephants in wild. Otherwise you just support the business of catching those animals taking them from their pack and brutally train them. If you feel sorry for them just send money or visit those few sanctuary where you don't interact with them AT ALL you just watch them from a distance. Again they are wild animals they don't feel comfortable with you touching them bathing them or riding them. Even if you don't see them crying and you can say that they are happily take food from your hands think if they wouldn't be more happy to grab the fruit themselves from the tree and if humans just let them be in wild instead. But as long as tourist will keep paying for those attractions it will be still a good business to enslave those animals.
